Strength in the same plan

Concurrent strength work, as reviewed by Rønnestad and Mujika (2014), is a practical fourth discipline for economy and durability. Theron schedules it beside swim, bike, and run.

Separate it from the key endurance day when you can. Two short sessions in base, then fewer once the race build gets long. This is not a promise you will stay unhurt. It is a way to keep the week from ignoring strength.

FAQ

Why add strength if I already swim, bike, and run?

Reviews of concurrent strength for endurance athletes, including Rønnestad and Mujika (2014), describe better economy and durability. Theron puts that in the week instead of leaving it as a PDF you never open.

Will strength make me bulky or slow?

The sessions are short and scheduled away from your key endurance day. The aim is a stronger stride and a more durable body, not a bodybuilding block.

How many strength sessions a week?

Two in a base block, then one or two to keep the strength while the race build gets bigger.

What if I miss one?

It is left behind. The next strength day is the next one on the plan, not a makeup set piled onto a hard run.
