Prevenção de Lesões: O Poder da Taxa de Carga de Trabalho Aguda:Crônica (ACWR)

Most non-traumatic triathlon injuries, the nagging aches and pains that derail a season, are preventable. They are rarely caused by high training volume alone, but by doing too much, too soon. The Acute:Chronic Workload Ratio (ACWR), popularized in the sports-medicine literature by Blanch and Gabbett (2016) and related work from Gabbett’s group, is a practical metric for spotting those spikes so you can replace guesswork with data-driven injury-risk management.

Moving Beyond the "10% Rule"

  • Carga de trabalho aguda: The total training load (measured in TSS) you have accumulated in the last 7 dias. This represents your current fatigue.
  • Carga de trabalho crônica: The rolling average of your weekly training load over the past 4 semanas (28 dias). This represents the fitness base you have prepared your body for.

The formula is simple: ACWR = Carga de Trabalho Aguda / Carga de Trabalho Crônica

The "Sweet Spot" and the "Danger Zone"

  • < 0,8 (frio 🥶): Your recent training is significantly less than what you're used to. You may be at risk of undertraining or losing fitness.
  • 0,8 - 1,3 (ponto ideal ✅): This is often described as an optimal zone for building fitness, where acute load progresses relative to chronic load without an extreme spike.
  • > 1.5 (Zona de perigo ⚠️): This indicates a sharp spike in your workload. Your body is not prepared for this level of stress, and your risk of sustaining an overuse injury is substantially elevated in the classic ACWR framing.

The Power Couple: ACWR + HRV

ACWR is even more useful when combined with Heart Rate Variability (HRV). A high ACWR is especially concerning when readiness markers such as HRV are also low, signaling that the body may not be coping with the sudden increase in workload. That combination is a practical red flag to prioritize recovery antes an injury occurs (ACWR for load spikes; HRV as a separate readiness check).
